My research and consulting focus on how police practices, public policy, and neighborhood investment affect crime and safety. My doctoral research at Cambridge examines how improving neighborhood conditions can reduce serious crime.
Before turning to research and consulting, I spent twenty years with the NYPD, retiring as a Deputy Inspector in 2023. My assignments included command of the 111th Precinct and the Operations Research Section, policing strategy in the Police Commissioner’s Office, and service as Executive Officer of the Office of Crime Control Strategies. I later served as an Inspector with the MTA Police Department.
That experience informs a particular expertise in New York City’s administrative data on crime, disorder, enforcement, and police operations, including how those records are produced, interpreted, and revised.
